Yellowfin tuna in Costa Rica are famous for two things: brute strength and the spectacular way they are found — under huge pods of spinner dolphin. Spotting the birds and porpoise, then dropping into a boiling school of tuna, is offshore fishing at its most electric. And unlike the billfish, a yellowfin is dinner — sashimi-grade, straight off the boat.
Where & when
Offshore, anywhere dolphin pods are working bait — often the same runs as the billfish grounds.
How we fish it
Trolling feathers and cedar plugs near the pods, then casting poppers or live bait into the school. Bigger fish take patience and drag. We keep your catch for the table.
